In the summer of 2012 I travelled in Myanmar (Burma) and found inspiration in the temples of Bagan, the floating gardens of Inle Lake and the sweltering heat and teaming markets of Yangon. As a country of 53 million, Myanmar’s recent opening-up has triggered an explosion of people coming online. As recently as 2011, a mere 500,000 Myanmar citizens were able to access the internet, which was less than 1 percent of the population. That number has grown to 2.6 million people as the availability of mobile phones has made it easier to get online. As Myanmar speakers embrace online tools, our team has been working hard to ensure Google is ready to support this new community in their own language. 

To capture the nuances of this language and make sure the translations were accurate, consistent and complete, we relied on an array of Myanmar speakers from within the country, and around the world. In April 2013 we launched Google Search in Myanmar, and today we’re excited to announce that Gmail now supports Myanmar (Burmese), our 74th language.

yanma bhasa (Burmese) is the official language of Myanmar, spoken by over 33 million people as a first language, and 10 million people as a second language. Although primarily spoken in Myanmar, there are also significant numbers of Myanmar speakers in Thailand, the United Kingdom and the United States. 

Myanmar speakers can switch their language in their Gmail settings starting today, and we couldn’t be happier that Gmail can now greet them with a hearty “Mingalaba” (မင်္ဂလာပါ)!

ျပည္တြင္းရွိ Email အသံုးျပဳသူမ်ားအနက္ အမ်ားဆံုးအသံုးျပဳၾကသည့္ Gmail ကို ျမန္မာဘာသာျဖင့္ စတင္ အသံုးျပဳႏိုင္ရန္ Google မွ စီစဥ္ေပးခဲ့သည္ဟု Google ၏ Product Manager ျဖစ္သူ Divon Lan က ေျပာသည္။

Gmail ကို ျမန္မာဘာသာျဖင့္ ေျပာင္းလဲအသံုးျပဳလိုပါက Language Drop Down Menu မွတစ္ဆင့္ Setting အတြင္းသို႔ ၀င္ေရာက္၍ Myanmar Language ကို ေရြးခ်ယ္ေပးရမည္ဟု သိရသည္။ Gmail ကို ျမန္မာဘာသာျဖင့္ ေျပာင္းလဲအသံုးျပဳရာတြင္ ျမန္မာႏိုင္တြင္ အမ်ားဆံုးအသံုးျပဳေနသည့္ Zawgyi Font ကို အသံုးျပဳႏိုင္မည္မဟုတ္ဘဲ Unicode စံသတ္မွတ္ခ်က္ညီသည့္ Font ကိုသာ အသံုးျပဳႏိုင္မည္ဟု သိရသည္။

“ကၽြန္ေတာ္တို႔ရဲ႕ Product မ်ားကို ျမန္မာဘာသာနဲ႔ အသံုးျပဳႏိုင္ဖို႔အတြက္သာမကဘဲ ျမန္မာစကား ေျပာဆိုသူမ်ား ၀က္ဘ္ဆိုက္မွာ ရင္ဆိုင္ႀကံဳေတြ႕ေနရတဲ့ ဘာသာစကား အခက္အခဲေတြ ကို ေလ်ာ့နည္းေစဖို႔ အတြက္ အစြမ္းကုန္ႀကိဳးစားလ်က္ရွိပါတယ္” ဟု Divon Lan က ဆိုသည္။

ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံ၌ Gmail အသံုးျပဳသူအေရအတြက္သည္ ၁.၉၈ သန္းရွိၿပီး ျပည္တြင္း Email အသံုးျပဳသူမ်ားအနက္ အေရအတြက္ အမ်ားဆံုးအသံုးျပဳေနသည့္ Email အမ်ိဳးအစားတစ္ခုျဖစ္သည္ဟု သိရသည္။ အလားတူ ကမၻာေက်ာ္ Email အမ်ိဳးအစားတစ္ခုျဖစ္သည့္ Yahoo ကို ျပည္တြင္း၌ အေရအတြက္ ၁၇၀,၀၀၀ သာ အသံုးျပဳ ၾကသည္ဟု သိရသည္။

Google သည္ ၎တုိ႔၏ Search Engine ကို ျမန္မာဘာသာျဖင့္ အသံုးျပဳႏိုင္ေစရန္ google.com.mm ကို ၂၀၀၃ ခုႏွစ္က စတင္မိတ္ဆက္ေပခဲ့ၿပီး Gmail ကိုမူ ျမန္မာဘာသာျဖင့္ အသံုးျပဳႏိုင္ သည့္ စတုတၴေျမာက္ ျမန္မာႏိုင္ငံအတြက္ ထုတ္ကုန္အျဖစ္ မိတ္ဆက္ေပးခဲ့ျခင္း ျဖစ္သည္။

Gmail ကို ျမန္မာဘာသာျဖင့္ ေျပာင္းလဲအသံုးျပဳရာတြင္ ကြန္ပ်ဴတာ၊ မိုဘိုင္းဖုန္းႏွင့္ အျခားေသာ Electronic Device မ်ား၌ Font ျပႆနာမ်ား အဆင္ေျပေခ်ာေမြ႕ႏိုင္ေစရန္ Virtual Keyboard ႏွစ္ခု ကိုလည္း Google က အခမဲ့ေပးအပ္ထားသည္ဟု သတင္းထုတ္ျပန္ထားသည္။
